Wyandra

Wyandra was the name given to an original section of the Warrego River, along with Claverton, Ardgour and Clovelly. All are English names and it would seem that the early settlers were homesick, or had a sense of humour as the area is in stark contrast to their namesakes in England.

The explorer Edmund Kennedy passed this way in 1847, camping on the river. He noted in his journal “a two mile stretch of water 60yrds wide”. You can visit his campsite as you follow the Heritage Trail.

The railway line was completed on 21st June 1897, six months earlier than expected. The extension of the line saw the township of Wyandra develop. The railway line was used extensively for mail, trucking stock and wool. Wyandra was a major water stop for the steam engines. The last passenger train departed Wyandra on 5th September, 1994.
